Jay Hickman and His Stand-Out Stand-Up Comedies

Jay Hickman was a stand-up comedian noted for his down-home wit and often-bawdy material, which he self-released. Of all the Laughing Hyena Records' comedians, Jay Hickman is the best-selling and most-radio-played. Buy Boat Ride, his hallmark piece about a depraved sex maniac who couldn't speak plainly, to find out why. At its peak, advertising planes flew over Florida's Atlantic coast, following a banner that read "Boat Ride."

Jay had a regular stint at Thee Doll House, a topless titty bar with locations in Myrtle Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Atlanta, where he was known as the Cheetah 3. In the late 1980s, comedy clubs were still in their infancy; therefore, he never performed there. Jay adored sleeping in his own bed every night and looking after the strip joint's employees. He would take his full check on payday and spend the money to tip the servers, who were always in need of money. Jay was constantly fed, and his rent was paid thanks to a generous club owner named Michael J. Peters.

About His Early Life and Career

Hickman was a "truck-stop" comic, which refers to a form of comedy intended at a Southern audience and whose content was largely distributed at truck stops. He was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He began his career at the age of 15 when he won a Women's Club of America-sponsored state talent event in North Carolina. Later, when the legendary comedian Jackie Gleason saw him perform, one of Gleason's buddies swiftly engaged the unknown comic to appear on cruise ships, and he went on to fame performing in strip clubs across the Southeast.

He developed and maintained a cult following of fans from those locations, the majority of whom owned his self-produced cassette tapes of those strip club performances, which he self-distributed prior. Laughing Hyena Records, the same label that discovered comic Jeff Foxworthy, has signed him to a record deal.

A total of seven CDs were issued, including funny fishing songs, and the company's website still sells them. Hickman has also been on HBO, Showtime, and The Playboy Channel, as well as opening shows for comedians Jackie Gleason and Sammy Davis Jr., and opening concerts for musical artists Tom Jones, Liza Minnelli, Tanya Tucker, Aretha Franklin, Mel Torme, and Anita Baker.

His All-Time Stand-Up Comedies

Hickman died in 1993 at the age of 37 after being diagnosed with liver illness in the 1980s. He is interred in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina's Southeastern Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Despite his lack of widespread fame, Hickman's cult following lives on thanks to Laughing Hyena Records' commitment to honor Hickman's final request, which was for them and only them to continue marketing his CDs for future generations to hear, as stated on the inner sleeves of Hickman's CDs by his best friend and company founder, Arnie Hoffman.
